Conference Objectives

How effective are monetary, fiscal and industrial policies in highly indebted countries? Are traditional government interventions sufficient to restore macroeconomic balance and vigour in sluggish economies? These questions have entered the research agenda with force and energy after the failure of standard government measures tackling the consequences of the 2008 financial crises. In many countries, deep fiscal imbalances coupled with slow growth and high level of unemployment have forced governments in an area where policies appear to be completely ineffective or even damaging. This is particularly true for EU countries with high levels of sovereign debt. The failure is presumably the result of frictions in the working of markets and the effect of a resilient institutional framework which affects the channel of transmission of fiscal, monetary and industrial policies to the economy. The conference has the objective to discuss the power of government policies in alleviating economic imbalances and, hence, it aims at addressing an old issue through the force of new evidence and theoretical arguments. The role of institutions in allocating resources, the power of policies to produce sound growth and development, the interplay between monetary, fiscal and industrial policy in achieving specific goals, are only some of the issue that the conference will address.
